This is worth repeating.  You should not use a cartridge ionizer.  They are very expensive, have to be replaced every few months, and you have very little or no control on the amount of ionization being produced.  Most are sold without a copper test kit which is really stupid as you need to know what the copper level is so you can maintain the proper amount.  The best method of ionizing a pool and the lowest cost over time is with an electronic ionizer.  If you don't want to invest in our Sunshine Ionizer then the next best thing is to use our Instant Ions and a copper test kit to ionizer your spa.  Instant Ions are an ionizer in a bottle.  The Nature 2 spa cartridge costs about $32 and lasts 4 months.  A pint of Instant Ions cost $24 and lasts more than a year in a spa, and only needs to be tested and added every few weeks.

What is Ionization?    The electronic release of copper / zinc Ions.
What is an Ion?  Ions are positively charged atoms.
How does Ionization work?    A safe low voltage DC current is applied to the copper, silver, and zinc electrodes.  As the ions attempt to move from one electrode to the other, they become suspended in the water.
How does copper, silver, and zinc ionization purify water? The copper, silver, and zinc ions disrupt the enzyme balance of bacteria and virus.
Is ionization all that you need for your water? It is usually necessary to add an oxidizing agent periodically to help break down excess organic debris, suntan and body oils ext. Using a non chlorine oxidizer allows you to soak shortly after application so you never have to soak in chemicals again!
How is ionization safer than chemicals?   Most, if not all of the chemicals used to purify water are caustic and or toxic.  Many are now thought to be Carcinogenic.  Copper, silver, and zinc are safe for drinking water as well as spa water in quantities much greater than necessary for purification.
How is ionization more pleasant than chemicals?    The need for high levels of chemicals is eliminated.  Also eliminated are the strong chemical odors, damaging effects on hair, skin, fabrics, liners and pumping equipment. Furthermore, you eliminate the need for frequent trips to the store to purchase heavy containers of chemicals. Chemical storage is no longer a problem.
What are the operational costs of ionization?    In most cases, the electrodes will last ten years and are relatively inexpensive to replace.  The only other cost is the electrical consumption which is only about a dollar a year.
How often will I have to test the water?    You will need to test the ion level every few weeks and maintain proper water balance.  The ion system is pH neutral so it will not change your water balance like chemicals do.
What about bromine?  Bromine compounds are about 1/3 chlorine anyway.  Bromine is more expensive than chlorine and still burns the eyes and skin.

Cost:   An ionizer costs less, but requires a sanitizer to be used with it.  Our AUTOCLOR cost more but provides 100% sanitation.  AUTOCLOR  is the only salt chlorine generator with long lasting electrodes.
Cost to operate:  Both systems will cost about the same to keep your spa sanitized; about $2 a month for the average Spa.
Installation:  Both are installed about the same.
Maintenance:  There is no easier way to sanitize a spa than with AUTOCLOR.  There is no maintenance.  All you do is turn a dial to adjust the sanitizer level.
Water Quality:  Both systems will give you water quality that is much better than with traditional chemical treatments.  If you must totally get away from chlorine you can with our ionizers with the use of a non chlorine shock.

Yes, you can use AUTOCLOR with Sunshine Ionizer.  In fact we recommend it.  By using both a Chlorine Generator and Ionizer system you get the benefits of both.  The Ionizer reduces the demand on AUTOCLOR so all you need to do is maintain a low .5 ppm of chlorine or bromine.  With this low level you won't even know the chlorine is there without testing for it.  See our Automatic SPA Purification System page for more information.
