PURITY SPA CHLORINE GENERATOR WITH IONIZATION INSTRUCTIONS

MODEL PSRI

Thank you for purchasing PURITY automatic spa purification system.  Carefully and completely read these instructions before installing.

1. Before installing PURITY the spa should be clean, sanitized, pH balanced, the filter cleaned, and shocked with chlorine to 5 PPM.  If the water has not been changed in the last 2 weeks, drain the spa and start with fresh water.

2. Turn off the power to the spa.

3. Mount the PURITY control box with the cords facing down, where it is convenient to use, where the cell can be placed in the spa, or if an in-line cell where the cord will reach where it is to be installed, and where the power supply can be connected to it when connected to the spa equipment power or other power source.  If the power supply is not located inside the spa cabinet it must be installed at least 5 feet from the spa, and not outdoors.

4. To mount the control box, remove the faceplate and insert the mounting screws into the slots on all four corners.  If you need to remove the cell cord to feed through a hole, disconnect the cord and reinstall the same way.  After feeding the cord from the power through any holes required for installation, install in into the larger hole in the control box and a wire tie installed to the cord tightly to retain the cord.  The wiring is as follows:  Connect the black cell wire to the black wire next the white wire on the circuit board, and the white cell wire to the white wire that is next to the black wire on the circuit board.  Connect the black wire from the power supply to the black wire at the corner of the circuit board.  Connect the red wire from the power supply to the red wire in the center of the circuit board.  Connect the white wire from the power supply to the white wire in the center of the circuit board.  The blue and yellow wires are not connected.

5. If the cords were removed, install the wire ties provided against the inside of the box and around each cord and pull tight with pliers.  This is to retain the cords in the box.  Cut off the end of the wire ties with small diagonal pliers.

6. If you have the in-line cell, plumb the tee into the circulating pump line after the equipment pack and so that the electrode cell can be removed and so that the cell is horizontal and so air will not get trapped in the cell.  When installed the black line on the cell must be vertical.  If it is not rotate the electrode fitting until it is vertical.  If you have the drop-in cell insert the cell in the water as deep as possible in the bottom of a seat or an out of the way place and support the cord with the cord strap and the brass screw supplied.

7. The power supply should be wired so that it has 120 or 240 VAC all the time.  Plug the power supply into an outlet on the spa control box, if available, or wire it inside the spa control box.  If you cut the plug off the power cord, the AC power is connected to the power cord as follows: the black wire is the hot wire; the white wire is the neutral wire if 120 volt, or the other hot if 240 volt; the green wire is the ground.  A licensed electrician should perform the wiring if you are not sure how to wire the AC power.

8. Place the power supply inside the spa cabinet where it will not get wet.  If the power supply is not located inside the spa cabinet it must be installed at least 5 feet from the spa, and not outdoors.

9.      Reinstall the front cover with the four screws previously removed.

10.  Turn on the power to the spa.

PURITY OPERATION

1.      Turn on the spa-circulating pump.

2.      Set the control to MAX.  The power, and cell power lights will come on.  Turn the output control to MIN and the cell power lights will go off indicating PURITY is operating properly.  Turn the output control back to MAX.

3.      Turn on all jet pumps while adding salt, Sodium Bromide, and Instant Ions to the spa.  Add Instant Ions to your water following the instructions on the bottle.  Test the copper level with the copper test kit provided.  Test the copper level weekly and add as needed.  Add half of the bottle of Sodium Bromide (2 oz) to your spa water.  Add 2 oz of Sodium Bromide each time you drain and fill your spa.  Add 2 cups of salt to the spa water for every 100 gallons.  The salt level must be maintained at 2,500 to 3,500 when using the salt test kit.  Use untreated fine grain, salt or water softener salt (rock salt).  Do not use any salt that has any additives.  The salt must be a minimum of 99.5% pure.  You can purchase this salt from your local grocery store or pool dealer.  You will need to add salt to your spa any time you replace the water, or the salt level drops below 2,500 ppm.  Let the pumps run for 15 minutes after the salt is added.  Be careful not to add too much salt, because if you add too much salt you will have to remove some of your spa water and add fresh water to dilute the water. The cell power light will change color from green to red to green equally every 20 minutes to indicate the cleaning circuit is operating properly.  The cell power light only comes on when the output is timed on, according to the control setting.

4.      Turn off all the pumps and blowers.  You should now see tiny bubbles flowing up from the cell if it is a drop in cell.  If you have an inline cell with a dedicated jet you may be able to see some tiny bubbles coming from the jet.

5.      Test the water with a standard chlorine test kit, and maintain .2 ppm of chlorine by adjusting the output control.  Maintain pH at 7.2 to 7.6.  Set the control to MAX and only turn down if the chlorine reading is above .5 ppm.

6.      Test the salt level every three months and adjust as needed.  You will only need to change your spa water once or twice a year, and when you do, follow the start up procedure above.

7.      The electrodes should stay clean, but if the cell should clog with a white calcium build up the cell must be cleaned chemically.  To clean:  Turn off the PURITY controller and remove the cell from the spa.  Place the cell in a bucket of 1 part hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) and 5 parts water.  Soak for about five minutes or until all scale is removed and rinse by dipping the cell in clean water.  Do not try to clean the cell any other way or the electrodes will be damaged and void the warranty.

8.      Now you can enjoy your spa with the softest, nicest, safest, water you have ever experienced.

9.      Keep these instructions in a safe place.

TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE

Please read this guide before calling your dealer or the manufacturer.

PROBLEM

CAUSE

SOLUTION

1.       Low Chlorine Level

Output Control setting to low

Low Salt Level

Electrodes Need Cleaned

Worn Out Electrodes

Equipment Failure

Increase Output Control setting

Check salt level and add salt if below 2,500 ppm.

Clean electrodes according to cleaning instructions under OPERATION.

Check electrodes for wear or damage.  The electrodes have a 10,000 to 20,000 hour life and may need replaced if they are old and failing.

Check CELL POWER light.  It should be on when output is set at MAX.

2.    High Chlorine level

Output Control setting to high

Set control to a lower setting until chlorine level is below .5 ppm.

3.    Cloudy Water

Insufficient Chlorine Level

Insufficient pump run time

Dirty filter

Shock water with chlorine and test for at least 5 ppm after 30 minutes.  Shock whenever the water just begins to cloud.

Circulating pump should run at least 4 hours every day.

Check and clean filter

4.    Scale Build-up on Electrodes

Controller cleaning cycle failure

Electrodes need manual cleaning

Observe CELL POWER light to see that the color is changing from green to red equally about every 20 minutes.  Control will need to be set at MAX temporarily to observe light.

If there is a scale build-up between the electrodes, then clean the electrodes according to the instructions under OPERATION.

5.    Controller Shuts Off as soon         as power is turned on.

Shorted Electrodes

Controller Failure

Clean and check electrodes for a short. If problem is not corrected, disconnect electrode wires from controller and test controller.
